C.L.E.A.R Dog Training was formed in 2001 to fill a gap in the Brisbane market for giving a head start in life to puppies and adolescent dogs in the immediate post-puppy-school stage. Our gentle reward based training techniques, together with a 'Yes! That's right!' marker signal, are designed to ensure that people's dogs learn willingly and quickly through Cooperation rather than compulsion, Love rather than subservience, Enthusiasm rather than stress, Authority rather than domination and Respect rather than fear.

We are committed to providing the most effective and enjoyable solutions to our clients so that they can co-exist happily with their dogs, enjoy their company on walks and have rewarding long term relationships with them. C.L.E.A.R is well respected and referred to by local veterinarians, veterinary behaviourists, animal welfare shelters, breeders, breed rescue groups, pet stores and other dog trainers.

Until the early 1990s nearly all obedience training in Australia was done by traditional correction methods. In recent years a greater understanding of learning theory, animal behaviour and psychology has revolutionised how we are able to communicate with and teach our dogs. As the dog-owning public becomes more knowledgeable people are increasingly looking for an alternative such as C.L.E.A.R Dog Training to the traditional correction based training methods.

We have had owners coming to our group classes, as well as for private lessons from as far away as the Bay Islands, Beenleigh and Mt Tamborine to the south, The Gap, Pullenvale, Karana Downs, Ipswhich and Gatton to the west and Caboolture, Mooloolaba and Buderim to the north. Some people, including several vets and breeders, have driven a round trip of two or more hours to attend a second, third and even a fourth course.

Third years students from the University of Queensland Veterinary Science School come to us regularly for work experience, as do students who are doing the Delta Society Australia's Certificate IV in Behavioural Dog Training. We have always welcomed vet nurses and trainers who have brought their own dogs to our training; and encouraged them to take any of the techniques learned from us to use back at their own puppy schools or older dog classes - as well as to attend our professional development workshops and seminars.

Private in-home lessons and problem behaviour consultations are held by appointment throughout Metropolitan Brisbane and surrounding areas. Small group classes are held during the week and at weekends at our indoor and outdoor training facility at 11 Belmont Rd, Tingalpa.

Oliver Beverly, Business Proprietor and Chief Instructor, came from a traditional training background and says,"for 25 years I trained 'obedience' by punishing undesired behaviour out of dogs with 'push and pull' techniques - for much of that time I simply didn't realise there was a choice. I stopped using a check chain, initially with hesitation and scepticism, only after noticing the consistently steeper learning curve of reward-based trained dogs and seeing the dogs and their owners enjoying training.

Our current family pet dog,"Millie" (above), has been entirely taught with positive reinforcement methods. Unlike our previous dogs she has never received a collar correction in her life.

She obtained her Master's title with the Agility Dog Association of Australia before she was 3½. In 2000 she was ADAA's Dog of the Year in the Mini class and in the International Agility Link Competition she was the highest placed Australian dog and ranked twelfth internationally. She won the Mini class in the Agility Dog Club of Queensland's Monthly Top Dog Competition in '00, '01 and '02 and for the same three years was a member of the Eukenuba Agility Demonstration team.

I am a full member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia, whose aim is to build better trainers through on-going education, a Dog Obedience Trainers Association Instructor, have a Certificate IV in Behavioural Dog Training and am an accredited Delta Canine Good Citizen Instructor - the highest level of nationally accredited dog trainers in Australia.

In 2003 I was invited by the Australian Veterinary Association to assist in their Pets and People Education Program. Ever since then Millie and I have regularly assisted at schools throughout metropolitan Brisbane showing school children how to interact safely with dogs."

As part of on-going education and professional development I - like all the instructors at C.L.E.A.R, past and present - attend as many workshops, seminars and conferences on modern training and behaviour modification methods as possible. This year these have included:

March 2009: Kay Laurence's  workshop ('Teaching with reinforcement - for every day and in every way') for established clicker trainers to improve their micro-shaping skills at her internationally famous 'Learning About Dogs' centre in Gloucestershire, UK.

October 2009: Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia's 3 day conference in Sydney with Dr Pamela Reid (Canada) 'The Stages of Exel-erated Learning' , 'Training on the Cutting Edge', 'Canine Cognition' , and Sarah Kalnajs (USA) 'Serious Aggression in Puppies', 'Living and working in a Multi-Dog Household' and 'Guarding: Food, Bones, Toys and Beyond'.

February - September 2009: Brisbane Veterinary behaviourist Dr Cam Day's monthly "HelpPet Fix'" seminars on 'My Dog is Aggressive to Other Dogs', 'My Dog is Aggressive to Other People', 'My Cat is Aggressive to People and Other Cats', 'My Dog Has Separation Anxiety' , 'Getting good behaviour from delinquent dogs',  'My Dog is Bored, Escaping, Destructive and Barking' and, pending, 'My Dog Has Noise Fears' (11th November).

If dogs are fearful of their owners they shut down completely to avoid unpleasant things happening. 'Bailey', our 2-year-old red Kelpie, was a rescue dog with a traumatic background. Once we established a good and trusting relationship his confidence and attitude changed completely. He is now a delightful and outgoing dog that loves to learn and is fun to teach. Being able to help other people achieve the same results with their dogs is why I first went to C.L.E.A.R"

Sarah Weston is committed to helping all dogs to have owners who know what to do and what everyday mistakes to avoid making. She has been a member of numerous dog clubs and organisations and extensively involved with dogs of all breeds and ages for 15 years. During the week she is a doggy day care supervisor and also runs her own business as a professional dog walker. On weekends she instructs at C.L.E.A.R Dog Training early morning classes before heading off with one of her Cocker Spaniels to compete in either agility, obedience, tracking, flyball, dancing with dogs, lure coursing or in the conformation show ring.

Sarah is one of those rare instructors who can both 'talk the talk' and 'walk the walk'! Harvey, a 9 year old Cocker, has won many ribbons and trophies in both obedience competitions and in the show ring. He is a Lure Coursing field champion and Australian Flyball champion and with the Agility Dog Association of Australia is an Australian Agility Champion and ADAA Jumping Dog. Through the Canine Control Council of Queensland he has his Jumping Dog Excellent title, Agility Dog Excellent title, Tracking Dog title and Endurance Test title and is working towards achieving the Master Agility and Jumpers title as well as the Flyball Masters title.

Jasmine is Sarah's youngest dog, a cheeky 3 year old who already is an ADAA Australian Agility Dog, Australian Agility Team Dog and Australian Flyball Champion. With the CCCQ she has her Agility Dog Title, Jumping Dog title and Tracking Dog title. She has done basic gundog training and has successfully completed her Canine Good Citizen test. Jasmine is also great in the show ring and has won Best Desexed Exhibit at the last two Cocker Spaniel Championship shows. However, her  passion for chasing birds has at times slowed her progress in  competitions - but has ensured her most recent achievement of Lure Coursing Champion!

Gemma Stutzle (instructing at 'puppy' school) says, "I completed my Bachelor of Applied Science in Animal Studies at the University of Queensland specialising in companion and recreational animals.
   Gemma Stutzel, Instructor
"I believe that training methods where fear or pain is involved can cause the animal to become depressed withdrawn or aggressive. I enjoy the approach at C.L.E.A.R's puppy school where training & fun are one and the same thing and puppies have a head start in their lives."

Eliza Borlace enrolled in the 'Foundation' class with her 2 year old Pug, 'Merlin' and soon afterwards in the Puppy Two class with her Jack Russell puppy, 'Belle.' She enjoyed both courses so much that, after discussing the various options available for becoming an instructor, she completed the Thompson Education Direct course. She volunteered to help with the administrative paper work and at training sessions has become an integral part of the C.L.E.A.R team. Pictures will be downloaded below shortly.

Rosina Silvestro is a Veterinary nurse who first came to classes at C.L.E.A.R with her dog 'Duff'.  She helps take Sunday morning puppy school classes. Further details and photographs will be uploaded shortly - please watch this space below.

Further details and photographs will be uploaded shortly in this space

Naomi Hartshorn-Smith is a junior handler who took her two Border Collies, Rolly and Asha, through puppy school, puppy two and the beginner's obedience/agility course. Her goal is to become a vet and she is an assistant-instructor at Sunday morning morning puppy schools. Further details and photographs will soon be uploaded in this space.
